A Brief History

European settlers arrived on the Freycinet Peninsula in the early 1800s. The area was developed by sealers, whalers, miners and farmers, although the main road from the highway was only completely sealed in the past 15 years. The locals will joke that the site of the gravel road kept the tourist buses out. When Freycinet National Park was declared in 1916 the Peninsula became increasingly popular as a holiday destination and there are still many examples of some of the early shacks.

Before European settlement the Big River and Great Oyster Bay aboriginal tribes made the annual journey, in the cooler months, to the Coles Bay area for seafood and swan eggs.
